Poliakrilamida kationik sesuai untuk larutan suspensi yang mengandungi bahan organik dan mempunyai cas negatif. Poliakrilamida anionik sesuai untuk ketumpatan yang lebih tinggi, bahan ampaian bukan organik dengan cas positif dan neutral atau asas, dengan zarah ampaian tebal 1mm-10mm.
Poliakrilamida terdapat dalam pelbagai bentuk seperti emulsi minyak berbutir, cecair, tablet, dan bentuk blok. Poliakrilamida kering lebih mudah disimpan, diangkut dan diukur ke dalam parit kepala dan ia juga mempunyai jangka hayat yang lebih lama daripada bentuk cecair. Walau bagaimanapun, bentuk cecair memerlukan kurang pengadukan untuk larut.

Poliakrilamida disintesis oleh pempolimeran akrilamida (C3H5TIDAK). Akrilamida biasanya dilarutkan dalam air, dan monomer terlarut (molekul unit tunggal) diinduksi untuk pempolimeran (bersambung bersama untuk membentuk molekul berbilang unit yang besar) melalui tindakan pemula radikal bebas.
