Polyakrylamider syntetiseres ved polymerisering av akrylamid (C3H5NEI). Akrylamid er vanligvis oppløst i vann, og de oppløste monomerene (enkeltenhetsmolekyler) induseres til å polymerisere (kobles sammen for å danne store molekyler med flere enheter) gjennom virkningen av frie radikalinitiatorer.
